Kathmandu sits in a bowl-shaped valley at roughly 1,400 meters above sea level, and that elevation defines nearly everything about its weather. Unlike the lowland Terai to the south, where heat can be oppressive, Kathmandu enjoys a subtropical highland climate that feels mild for much of the year, with cool, dry winters and a pronounced monsoon that dominates summer. The valley's geography also means temperature swings between day and night can be sharp, from November through February, when mornings near freezing give way to pleasant afternoons in the low twenties Celsius. The year divides fairly cleanly into three broad seasons. The dry season runs from roughly October through May, with the driest and coolest stretch falling between November and February. Spring, from March through May, warms steadily and brings occasional pre-monsoon showers that build in frequency as the weeks pass. Then the monsoon arrives, typically in mid-June, and Kathmandu transforms. July and August are the wettest months by a wide margin, and while the rain doesn't usually fall all day, the afternoon downpours are heavy enough to flood streets and occasionally trigger landslides on surrounding hillsides. By late September the monsoon is retreating, and October tends to deliver the clearest skies and sharpest mountain views of the entire year. One thing worth noting is that Kathmandu's air quality varies dramatically by season. Winter inversions can trap smog and dust in the valley, creating a persistent haze that softens the mountain views and irritates throats. The monsoon, for all its inconveniences, washes the air clean, and autumn benefits from that reset. If Himalayan panoramas are a priority, timing matters more than most guidebooks let on.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach and Relaxation
April and May offer the warmest days, with highs reaching 28°C to 29°C (83°F to 84°F), before the monsoon humidity sets in.
Cultural Exploration
October and November, when the post-monsoon air is clear, temperatures are comfortable, and Kathmandu's festival calendar is at its richest, with Dashain and Tihar lighting up the valley in October and early November.
Adventure and Hiking
October and November without hesitation, as these months offer the best trekking conditions in the surrounding Himalaya, with stable weather, excellent visibility, and moderate temperatures in Kathmandu itself for pre-trek and post-trek days.
Budget Travel
Mid-December through February, when tourist numbers drop, guesthouse rates in Thamel soften considerably, and the cool, dry weather is well manageable with a decent jacket, even if mornings can feel cold.
