Day Trips from Kathmandu

Day Trips from Kathmandu

The best excursions and trips you can do in a day

Kathmandu sits in a bowl-shaped valley ringed by terraced hills and, beyond them, the Himalayan front range. That geography means you can leave the city's temple-dense core in the morning, spend the day at a medieval town square, a jungle-edge national park, or a ridgeline with views of eight-thousanders, and be back for dal bhat by evening. Most destinations in the valley are within an hour by car or local bus, though roads being what they are in Nepal, travel times can double during monsoon or festival traffic. The Kathmandu Valley itself holds three former royal capitals, each with its own Durbar Square, plus dozens of smaller pilgrimage towns and viewpoints that rarely appear on first-timer itineraries. Beyond the valley rim, the options open up further. Nagarkot and Dhulikhel sit on the eastern ridge with panoramic Himalayan views. Nuwakot and Bandipur lie a few hours northwest along the Prithvi Highway. And Chitwan, while a stretch for a single day, is technically reachable if you leave early and don't mind a long drive. What makes the day-trip scene around Kathmandu practical is the density of options. You're rarely choosing between just two or three places. On any given morning you could head to a lakeside temple, a Newari farming village, a hilltop fortress, or a rafting put-in point, all within roughly the same radius. The trick is matching the trip to the season, the day of the week, and your tolerance for Nepali mountain roads.

Full-Day Trips

Worth dedicating a whole day to explore.

Bhaktapur

Entry fee for foreign visitors plus transport runs modest. Budget travelers can do it for very little

Bhaktapur is the best preserved of the valley's three medieval city-states. It feels like Kathmandu with the volume turned down. Its main Durbar Square is smaller and less chaotic. The brick architecture is largely intact. The pottery workshops along the southern lanes still produce the same terracotta pieces they have made for centuries. Juju dhau, the creamy local yogurt sold in clay pots, is reason enough to visit. The Nyatapola Temple dominates the skyline. This five-story pagoda has survived every major earthquake since 1702.

Distance
13 km east of central Kathmandu
Travel Time
30-50 minutes by car, longer by local bus
Total Duration
5-7 hours
Transport
Local buses leave from Ratna Park bus station in Kathmandu roughly every fifteen minutes. A taxi or ride-share is faster and reasonably affordable. Some visitors combine Bhaktapur with Nagarkot or Changu Narayan for a full day.
Nyatapola Temple and Bhaktapur Durbar Square Pottery Square workshops where you can watch artisans throw pots Juju dhau yogurt from the shops near Taumadhi Square
Best for: Architecture and culture enthusiasts, photographers, anyone wanting a quieter alternative to Kathmandu's Durbar Square
Arrive before 9 AM to photograph the squares without tour groups. The entry ticket is valid for a week if you register it at the ticket office, so you can technically return another day.

Nagarkot

Transport is the main cost. Entry fees are minimal

Nagarkot is the most accessible Himalayan viewpoint from Kathmandu. It sits on the valley's eastern rim at about 2,175 meters. On a clear morning you can see a sweep of peaks from Dhaulagiri in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east. Everest appears as a small triangle behind the Nuptse-Lhotse wall. The village itself is modest. Expect guesthouses and a few restaurants. The sunrise views are spectacular when the weather cooperates. A bookable sunrise experience from Kathmandu takes you up to the Nagarkot view tower for a full panorama.

Distance
32 km east of Kathmandu
Travel Time
About 1-1.5 hours by car, depending on road conditions
Total Duration
6-8 hours if combined with Changu Narayan hike, 4-5 hours for viewpoint only
Transport
Local buses run from Kathmandu's City Bus Park via Bhaktapur. Hiring a car gives flexibility to stop at Changu Narayan on the return. Some organized tours combine the sunrise viewpoint with a downhill hike.
Sunrise over the Himalayan range including distant views of Everest Downhill hike to Changu Narayan temple through terraced farmland Quiet ridgeline walks through pine forest
Best for: Sunrise chasers, hikers wanting a gentle trek with big views, photographers
October through March offers the clearest skies. Monsoon months are largely a washout for views. If you're doing the Changu Narayan hike, start from Nagarkot and walk downhill rather than the reverse.

Patan (Lalitpur)

Durbar Square entry plus museum admission. Both are reasonable

Patan sits just across the Bagmati River from Kathmandu. It is technically a separate city. It feels close enough to be a neighborhood. It is distinct enough to warrant a full day. Its Durbar Square is arguably the most architecturally refined of the three valley squares. The Patan Museum, housed in a restored palace, holds one of the finest collections of South Asian bronze and stone sculpture anywhere. The backstreets south of the square are full of metalworking shops. Buddhist statues are still cast there using lost-wax techniques.

Distance
5 km south of central Kathmandu
Travel Time
20-30 minutes by taxi or local bus
Total Duration
4-6 hours
Transport
Easily reached by taxi, ride-share, or local bus from Ratna Park. You can also walk across the Bagmati bridge from Thamel in about 45 minutes if traffic cooperates.
Patan Museum's bronze collection in the restored Royal Palace Golden Temple (Kwa Bahal) with its ornate metalwork courtyard Mahabouddha Temple, covered entirely in terracotta tiles depicting Buddha
Best for: Art and architecture lovers, anyone interested in traditional metalcraft, museum-goers
Visit the metalworking workshops on the lanes south of the square in the morning when artisans are actively casting. The Patan Museum cafe has decent coffee and overlooks the square.

Changu Narayan Temple

Entry fee is modest. Transport depends on whether you hire a car or take local buses

Changu Narayan sits on a hilltop east of Bhaktapur. It is the oldest Hindu temple in the Kathmandu Valley. Stone inscriptions there date to the fifth century. The site feels wonderfully remote despite being only a short drive from the valley floor. The temple compound holds some of Nepal's finest early stone carvings. A famous Vishnu riding Garuda appears on older Nepali currency. The surrounding Changunarayan village has a handful of small museums and craft shops run by the local Newari community.

Distance
22 km east of Kathmandu
Travel Time
45 minutes to 1 hour by car
Total Duration
4-6 hours, longer if combined with Nagarkot hike
Transport
Most visitors combine it with Nagarkot, either driving directly or hiking the ridge trail between the two. Local buses reach nearby Bhaktapur, from where shared jeeps run up the hill.
Fifth-century stone carvings of Vishnu in various incarnations Panoramic valley views from the hilltop compound The ridge hike connecting Changu Narayan to Nagarkot through farmland
Best for: History enthusiasts, hikers looking for a cultural endpoint, anyone combining with Nagarkot
The Nagarkot-to-Changu-Narayan hike takes roughly three to four hours downhill and passes through villages where you can stop for tea. Bring water as there are few shops along the trail.

Dhulikhel

Budget-friendly; bus fare is minimal and there are no significant entry fees

Dhulikhel sits on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, slightly further than Nagarkot but with a more established town feel and equally impressive mountain views. The old bazaar area has traditional Newari architecture. The ridgeline above town has a sweeping panorama from Langtang to Everest. It's also the starting point for several day hikes, including a popular route to Namobuddha, a sacred Buddhist site with a monastery set among pine-forested hills.

Distance
30 km southeast of Kathmandu
Travel Time
1-1.5 hours by car or local bus
Total Duration
7-9 hours if including the Namobuddha hike
Transport
Regular local buses depart from Kathmandu's City Bus Park heading toward the Arniko Highway. Hiring a car allows you to stop at viewpoints along the way. The Dhulikhel-Namobuddha-Panauti loop works well as a driving circuit.
Panoramic Himalayan views from the Kali Temple ridge above town Hike to Namobuddha monastery through terraced hills Traditional Newari townhouses in the old bazaar
Best for: Hikers wanting a moderate day trek, travelers seeking mountain views away from the Nagarkot crowds
The Dhulikhel to Namobuddha hike takes about three hours one way through farmland and forest. You can arrange a vehicle pickup at Namobuddha. Or continue the loop to Panauti and drive back from there.

Pharping and Dakshinkali

Very affordable. Minimal entry fees and cheap local bus fare

The road south from Kathmandu climbs through the Champadevi hills to Pharping, a pilgrimage town sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. Guru Rinpoche reportedly meditated in a cave here. Several Tibetan monasteries have grown up around the site. A few kilometers further, Dakshinkali temple sits in a steep ravine where animal sacrifices still take place on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The combination of Buddhist meditation caves and a Hindu sacrificial temple within walking distance of each other is a distinctly Nepali contrast.

Distance
22 km south of Kathmandu
Travel Time
45 minutes to 1 hour by car
Total Duration
5-6 hours
Transport
Local buses run from Ratna Park to Dakshinkali, on sacrifice days. A hired car allows you to stop at both Pharping and Dakshinkali plus the Chobar Gorge on the return.
Guru Rinpoche meditation caves and the Asura Cave above Pharping Dakshinkali temple during a sacrifice morning for a raw cultural experience Chobar Gorge and the Adinath Lokeshwar temple on the return route
Best for: Travelers interested in living religious traditions, those comfortable with animal sacrifice rituals
Visit Dakshinkali on a Tuesday or Saturday morning if you want to witness the sacrifice rituals. Be aware that these are graphic. If that's not for you, Pharping alone is worth the trip for the monastery complex and cave shrines.

Nuwakot

The main expense is the car hire. Entry and food costs are negligible

Northwest of Kathmandu, the old fortress town of Nuwakot guards the trade route that once connected the valley to Tibet. The seven-story tower palace built by Prithvi Narayan Shah in the eighteenth century still stands, recently restored after earthquake damage. The views down the Trisuli Valley are expansive. Nuwakot sees very few tourists compared to the valley's more famous sites. You'll likely have the palace compound to yourself. The drive out follows the Trisuli River and passes through increasingly rural landscape.

Distance
75 km northwest of Kathmandu
Travel Time
2.5-3.5 hours by car, depending on road conditions
Total Duration
8-10 hours
Transport
Best done by hired car, as local bus connections involve transfers and uncertain schedules. The road follows the Prithvi Highway before branching north.
The restored Nuwakot Durbar, a seven-story tower palace with valley views Traditional Newari town architecture largely unchanged by tourism Views down the Trisuli River valley toward the Ganesh Himal range
Best for: History buffs, travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations, anyone tired of crowds
Combine with a stop at Kakani on the return for sunset views over the Ganesh Himal and Langtang ranges. Bring lunch. Restaurant options in Nuwakot are limited.

Panauti

Minimal; no significant entry fees and cheap local transport

One of the oldest towns in the valley, Panauti sits at the confluence of two rivers and holds a thirteenth-century temple complex that somehow survived the 2015 earthquake largely intact. The Indreshwar Mahadev temple, a three-tiered pagoda, is considered one of Nepal's oldest surviving wooden structures. The town is small enough to walk in an hour but dense with carved wooden windows, sunken water fountains, and small shrines tucked into residential courtyards. It pairs naturally with Dhulikhel or Namobuddha for a full day.

Distance
32 km southeast of Kathmandu
Travel Time
1-1.5 hours by car or local bus
Total Duration
4-5 hours alone, 7-8 hours combined with Dhulikhel or Namobuddha
Transport
Local buses from Kathmandu reach Panauti via Banepa. Hiring a car allows you to combine it with Dhulikhel and Namobuddha in a loop.
Indreshwar Mahadev temple, one of Nepal's oldest pagodas The sacred river confluence (triveni) with cremation ghats and small shrines Quiet backstreets with carved Newari windows and community life
Best for: Architecture enthusiasts, travelers wanting authentic small-town Nepal without tourist infrastructure
Panauti hosts the Makar Mela festival every January, drawing thousands of pilgrims to the river confluence. Outside festival time, you'll likely be the only foreigner in town.

Budhanilkantha and Shivapuri National Park

National park entry fee plus transport. Both affordable

At the northern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, the reclining Vishnu statue at Budhanilkantha lies in a sunken water tank, carved from a single block of black basalt and dating to at least the seventh century. It's one of the most striking individual sculptures in Nepal. Just behind the temple, the forested slopes of Shivapuri National Park rise steeply. A well-marked trail climbs through oak and rhododendron forest to the Shivapuri summit at 2,732 meters, offering clear-day views of Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and the western valley.

Distance
10 km north of central Kathmandu
Travel Time
30-45 minutes to Budhanilkantha by taxi
Total Duration
6-8 hours if hiking to Shivapuri peak, 2-3 hours for Budhanilkantha only
Transport
Taxis and local buses reach Budhanilkantha easily. For the Shivapuri hike, the park entrance is a short walk from the temple area.
The reclining Vishnu statue, one of the valley's most impressive single artworks Shivapuri peak hike through dense forest with Himalayan views from the top Birdwatching in the national park, during spring migration
Best for: Hikers wanting a forest trek near the city, sculpture and temple enthusiasts, birdwatchers
Start the Shivapuri hike early to reach the summit before midday clouds build. The trail is steep but well-maintained. Bring layers. The summit is noticeably cooler than the valley floor.

Half-Day Options

Shorter excursions when time is limited.

Kirtipur

Very affordable. Negligible entry fees

A hilltop Newari town just southwest of Kathmandu that was the last holdout against Prithvi Narayan Shah's unification campaign. The scars of that resistance are long healed. The town retains a proud independence from the valley's more touristed sites. Narrow lanes wind between brick houses. The Bagh Bhairav temple contains medieval weapons captured during the siege. The hilltop offers wide views over the valley. The local restaurants serve some of the best Newari food within easy reach of Kathmandu.

Duration
3-4 hours
Transport
Local buses from Ratna Park take about 30 minutes. A taxi is faster and not expensive.
Bagh Bhairav temple with its collection of medieval arms Panoramic valley views from the Chilancho Stupa hilltop Newari-style restaurants serving choila and beaten rice

Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) and surroundings

Entry fee is modest for foreign visitors

Swayambhunath alone takes an hour. Stretch it to a half-day. Add the hilltop monasteries nearby. Visit the Natural History Museum at the base. The eastern staircase is the classic approach. Rhesus monkeys line the route. The valley views from the top rank among Kathmandu's best. You never leave city limits. Tibetan settlements dot the north slope. Browse their shops. Duck into small monasteries.

Duration
2-3 hours
Transport
Take a short taxi from Thamel. Or walk 30 minutes from the tourist district.
The main stupa with its well-known painted eyes and prayer flags Valley-wide views from the hilltop, at sunset

Boudhanath and Kopan Monastery

Boudhanath entry fee is modest; Kopan is free

Boudhanath's massive stupa anchors Kathmandu's Tibetan exile community. The circular kora walk delivers one of the valley's most atmospheric experiences. Add Kopan Monastery uphill. Drop-in meditation sessions run daily. The views back over the stupa reward the climb. Narrow lanes surround the stupa. Thangka workshops line the streets. Monastery supply shops do brisk trade. Momos joints feed the resident community.

Duration
3-4 hours
Transport
Catch local buses from Ratna Park. Or grab a short taxi from Thamel. Kopan sits 20 minutes uphill from Boudhanath.

Day Trip Tips

Make the most of your excursions.

  • Road conditions vary wildly. Expect decent tarmac. Expect potholed tracks. Monsoon season hits hard. June through September brings rapid deterioration. Pad your driving time. This matters for Nuwakot. It matters for Dhulikhel. Anything beyond the valley rim needs buffer.
  • October through early December works. March through May works too. These windows deliver the best mountain views. Nagarkot and Dhulikhel need clear skies. Winter mornings in January and February can surprise you. Crystal clear days happen. But valley fog lingers. Sometimes it holds until midmorning.
  • Hire a car with driver. It's surprisingly affordable in Kathmandu. Multi-stop itineraries become practical. Forget cobbling together local buses. Negotiate everything upfront. Lock in the full itinerary. Confirm the price. Ask about fuel. Is it included?
  • Many temples charge foreign visitors separate entry fees. Carry small Nepali rupee notes. Change runs scarce at ticket counters. Some sites take cash only.
  • Stringing together valley destinations? Two loops make sense. Try Bhaktapur to Nagarkot to Changu Narayan. Or Dhulikhel to Namobuddha to Panauti. Each fills a full day. Each involves moderate walking.
  • Altitude matters at Shivapuri. It matters at Nagarkot. Both sit above 2,000 meters. Fresh arrivals from low elevation feel it. Steep trails leave you breathless. Drink water. Slow your pace.
  • Start early. Kathmandu traffic peaks 8 AM to 10 AM on weekdays. Depart by 6:30 or 7 AM. Beat the worst congestion. Arrive before tour bus crowds.
  • Saturdays are Nepal's weekly holiday. Some government museums close. Government offices close. Temples stay open. Outdoor sites stay open. Local families visit. Saturdays feel livelier. Schedule museum-heavy trips for weekdays.
